Japanese calligraphy or shodo is an artistic way of writing the Japanese language using brush (fude) and ink (sumi). This form of writing with a set brush stroke order allows for a creative way to produce works of art. Often tied with meditation, the mind is cleared to let the letters flow out with little effort. This state of mind is called mu shin or “no mind state.”
The custom of moon viewing held in mid-autumn is called Tsukimi in Japan and takes place on Jugoya (Aug 15th) in the lunar calendar. Jugoya in the solar calendar changes every year and usually falls on September or October. The moon may not always be full on Jugoya, but people believe on that the night the moon is the brightest and the most beautiful of the year.
Japanese people celebrate Tsukimi in a quiet manner. People look at the moon enjoying the serene beauty. Tsukimi also has the meaning of celebrating the autumn harvest. Come celebrate with us as we practice the art of calligraphy.
You do not need to know how to write in Japanese. All materials will be provided for the workshop. All levels are welcome.
