What is Capoeira? A unique style, Capoeira originated in Brazil from the blending of various African cultures from different African regions during slavery. Outlawed in 1892, Capoeira continued to evolve in the secret underground as a ritual-dance-fight-game, as a form of fighting, and musical expression. It’s decriminalization in the 20th century brought about 2 styles; Capoeira Regional and Capoeira Angola. Capoeira has since expanded throughout Brazil and many other countries. Players gather in a circle or roda singing and clapping to the rhythm of a percussive band led by long, bow-like instruments called berimbaus. Two players engage each other within the circle to the berimbau rhythm. Capoeira creates energy and teaches "go with the flow" and improvisation. Players learn to know themselves and each other while getting a great workout and a beautiful multicultural experience. About the Instructor Profesor Jordan Gibson has been studying Capoeira for 16 years under various Mestres. Having studied in the U.S. and Brazil, Profesor Gibson teaches Capoeira Regional with some aspects of Capoeira Angola. Schedule
