Kendo

What is Kendo?

Japanese fencing is popular worldwide. However, this class does not teach modern sports kendo. This is old-style, aggressive training in Kendo as a martial art, not for tournaments, as carried on in the famous Tokyo Haga Dojo. All practice begins with training in the forms of Shindo Munen Ryu Kenjutsu and Omori Ryu Iaido, followed by partner training with armor and training swords. Practice is intense and includes body checking and grappling. Rhythm and balance (tsunagiri) and combative distance and timing (maai) are emphasized. Bamboo training swords (shinai) are available for beginners to use; after the six week course, continuing students will need to invest in Kendo armor (bogu). 6-Week Introductory Course and Ongoing Training.
