Kintsugi Club

Join Takahashi-sensei in this 6-week advanced kintsugi club at at the Japanese Culture Center!

Kintsugi Club

Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese lacquer-art form in which gold is used to repair broken ceramics. The practice of Kintsugi highlights the break rather than erasing it and emphasizes that the break is what makes the ceramics more valuable.

Here is a quote about Kintsugi from Linda Muller, a certified life coach:
“Kintsugi is based on the philosophy that breakage and repair are something to celebrate – embracing flaws and imperfections creates a stronger and more beautiful piece of art. Using this as a metaphor for healing ourselves teaches us an important lesson: Sometimes in the process of repairing what feels broken, we become more unique, beautiful, and resilient. Kintsugi can be a way to reframe personal challenges. Reminding us that we’re not a victim of our circumstances. Showing us that we can come out on the other side stronger.”

At this advanced Kintsugi class, anyone are welcome to join. Also students who took the “Kintsugi for Beginners” workshop will be more than welcome to join this small group authentic natural process of Kintsugi. We meet six-weeks in each season, 1.5 hours each class on Thursdays. You will learn to use the real Urushi sap from the beginning of the mending process. Please let the JCC office/instructor know if you prefer to use an alternative Urushi from Mango to avoid an allergic reaction. You will have your moisture box for Urushi to be hardened, as well as a deep knowledge of other natural methods to assemble broken ceramics. You can work on your ceramic piece, but feel free to use broken ceramic plates provided by the instructor at the class if you prefer.

Location: JCC backspace (Please note: there is another class at the front area of JCC. This advanced Kintsugi clas will be held in the backspace area. You will need to remove shoes from the mat area. Please let the instructor know if you need a pair of slippers.)
