Kyudo (弓道) is a traditional Japanese archery. Our school, Heki-ryu Bishu Chikurin-ha (日置流尾州竹林派) Kyudo the way taught by the Imperial bow makers Shibata, Kanjuro (柴田勘十郎) XX (former) and XXI (current lineage holder) senseis in Kyoto, Japan, emphasizes its contemplative aspect of the practice. Our focus of the practice is on “polishing the mind’, rather than on marksmanship. With this, the target becomes a mirror reflecting the quality of one’s mind at the moment of the arrow’s release.
This two-day experiential workshop (First Shot) introduces Kyudo to beginners. No previous experiences are required. Through this workshop, the participants will be introduced the foundation of Kyudo, “Shichi-do (seven coordinations)”, the basic forms and steps for properly releasing the arrow. Through this brief workshop, we wish to share the taste of Kyudo and the “beginners mind”!
