Event Description

The upcoming 初鴬 hatsūguisu First Spring “Nightingale” haiku class will focus on bringing your “snapshots” alive – those moments that happen every day that go unnoticed due to the demands of life. Join us on this Path to awaken and return to the beginner’s mind where everything is fresh, new, and possible.

Each class in this 3-class series will be an hour and a half. The class dates are:

2/14, 2/21, 2/28

Please bring a notebook and writing instrument. Students will be given handouts and access to a class Dropbox to turn in for feedback.

  • Week 1: Introduction, expectations, “What is a Haiku?”, and assignments for 1st week
  • Week 2: Feedback and discussion, history, more “What is a Haiku”, and new assignments
  • Week 3: Possible Guest lecturer, Feedback and discussion, current(ish) authors, new assignments.
  • Week 4: Final critiques, “Where can I publish?”

There is a $20 suggested donation for these 4 sessions.

Instructor Bio:

Sensei Seiyo is the leader of the Chicago Keikokai of Meifu Shinkage Ryu style of Japanese Weapons at Japanese Culture Center – 日本文化会館, Haiku Evangelist for the Haiku Society of America, member of the British Haiku Society, and contributor to the International Haiku Association and lay Buddhist chaplain at the Jesse Brown VA Hospital.
