Virtual Sumi-e Classes October

Japanese ink painting, (sumi-e) is the art of painting using brush (fude), ink (sumi) and thin absorbent “rice-paper” (washi).

3 classes of Sumi-e (each 2 hours long). Advance at your own pace—you do not need to know how to paint with ink, all levels are welcome, if you need course materials a full sumi-e kit is available here.

Time: Sundays 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Dates: October 11, 18, and 25

The emphasis is on the process! The Class will be introduced to the “Four Treasures” (The ink stick, the ink stone, brush and paper) and each class will begin with a demonstration then guided instruction. Check out the YouTube videos for how to paint “The Four Gentlemen” (The lessons introduce the student to the four basic strokes groups).

Three Friends of Winter; learning the vocabulary of strokes through the language of trees. Intermediate and Advanced (prerequisite Trees class) will focus on “Tsuke Tate” technique: 10 stroke Tree, 3 stroke Tree, 1 stroke Tree, Dots; “Bokashi” shading technique and composing a painting using Paper from The Advanced Paper Roll.
